Question

Do I need to file form 1042 separately on paper if I entered my 1042-S information under "other income"

I am a foreign student on an F-1 visa and am a tax resident. I have received a fellowship (1042-S) from my university in 2020 in addition to my regular W-2 earnings. My 1042-S earnings were charged a 14% international tax. I have entered my W-2 information and entered the 1042-S information under "Miscellaneous Income" as per suggestions I saw on older threads in this forum. My question is that do I still need to file a paper return for my 1042-S (Form 1042) and mail it to IRS?

No, you do not need to submit a copy of the Form 1042S.  The 1042-S form should not be used for income tax purposes.  Your employer or the withholding agent should file the form with the IRS.  You, as the employee just need to report the income and the tax withholding from the form on your tax return accordingly.

To enter your tax withholding in TurboTax online program, here are the steps:

  • Sign back in to the program and select Take me to my return
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in estimated tax payments and Enter
  • Select Jump to estimated tax payments
  • Next screen, Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid,
  • Scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2020 / Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099, select Start to enter  information
