It depends if your school is an eligible educational institution. For education tax credits, including the Lifetime Learning Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit, you must attend an eligible educational institution. An eligible education institution is defined by the IRS as "any college, university, trade school, or other post-secondary educational institution eligible to participate in a student aid program run by the U.S. Department of Education."
Per IRS Publication 970, certain educational institutions located outside the United States are eligible. However, they must participate in a student aid program administered by the U.S. Department of Education. "The educational institution should be able to tell you if it is an eligible educational institution."
