Question

During my review there is an issue saying I need to put an amount down from a college tuition deduction but I didn’t pay any tuition in 2022. What do I do?

You may have inadvertently entered a response or clicked a button and TurboTax thinks you have some sort of education related issue.

Delete any education related forms like Form 1098-T or  Form 8863 that TurboTax may have generated.

  • If you're using TurboTax Online software and need to delete a form, click here.
  • If you're using TurboTax CD\Download software and need to delete a form, click here

Once you delete the forms, sign out of your TurboTax account and clear you cookies and your cache

Sign back into TurboTax and go back through the education section. Please follow these steps:

  1. Sign into your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Pick up where I left off or Continue.
  3. Type 1098-T in the search box and click on Jump to 1098-t.
  4. On the Do you want to enter your higher education expenses? screen, answer No.
  5. Continue with the onscreen interview until complete

You are not required to enter a 1098-T, just because the college issued one. The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

If you claim the tuition credit, you do need to report that you got one or that you qualify for an exception (the TurboTax interview will handle this)

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T.
