My daughter went to college and each year she was claimed as our dependent we couldn't claim the credit since our income was too high. This year my daughter is filing her own taxes but doesn't have the 1098-T form to claim the deduction. She went to school from Jan. 2019-May 2019 and paid tuition during this time. The college she attended said since she registered for classes in Dec. of 2018 her tuition was put on their 2018 1098-T. The college did not check the box that said some of the tuition on the tax statement is for 2019. The college said they just don't do that. Is there any way that she can still claim the tuition she paid even though she doesn't have the 1098-T from the college? When she went to file her taxes on-line, the program wouldn't allow her to put in the tuition amount since she didn't have the 1098-T.

When she begins in the educational section, the first question it asks if she received a 1098T for 2019. She would say "no." Next question asks OK, let's see if you qualify for an exception.

  1. If any of those three conditions mentioned are applicable then at the bottom of screen she will indicate that she qualifies for the exception.
  2. Then she would have to type in the school information INCLUDING the federal tax ID number at the bottom.  This number should be on a previous 1098T she may have received. This is crucial.
  3. Then she should be able to complete the questions and claim the credit.
