3rd year college son has 1098E with $28k in tuition and 13k in grants. He lives with me full time and I provide over half of expenses, but he paid the tuition. Which one of us should add this  1098 to our return? Both?  I researched and learned he may not get the Hope credit so I should file with this so we can get that credit of $2500?

Yes, you should file the 1098-T, on your tax return, if he qualifies as your dependent.  It does not matter that he paid the tuition.

What used to be called the Hope Credit (over 10 years ago) is now called The American Opportunity (Tax) Credit.  And you are correct there too, he almost certainly does not qualify.
