What if you do not get a 1098-T? My son's school said he didn't pay out of pocket therefore he doesn't get one. Turbo says put in tuition and fees regardless of if it was paid by others. He rec'd some Pell funds.  But in Turbo Tax it says don't include Pell payments when claiming scholarships.... If he is independent and not claimed by either parent this makes a big difference on his refund. I don't want to do the wrong thing. Is it possible that he can have a refund of almost $1600 more because he claims himself? He made $19000 working and he went to college full time in 2019.

If he is claiming tuition expenses paid with Pell Grant money, he should include the Pell Grant money in the scholarship section.  If he doesn't claim the tuition, he doesn't need to report the Pell Grant payments.

When it says paid by others, that means paid by you or another person or loans.  If he didn't pay any out of pocket expenses, he doesn't qualify for any education credits.  You may be able to deduct certain out-of-pocket education expenses that were not covered by scholarships or grants.   There is a place to enter the amounts paid for books and materials in the education section.   You can claim these expenses without a 1098-T, but should only do so if they were not paid with grant money.
