I attempted to fill out the Education deduction for my daughter.  She goes to an established university, Stephen F. Austin, and received a 1098T.  I filled in the data from the form and got a message saying that Her education assistance counts as income because her education assistance exceeded her education expenses, the money was used for nonqualified expenses, or she was not enrolled in a certificate or credential program at an eligible school.  Box one, payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses, on the same for was $8939.  Her grant amount was $3750.  How is $3750 greater than $8939?

Delete the student and start over.

Go through the entire education interview until you reach a screen titled "Your Education Expenses Summary".  Click delete next to the student's name.
