19yr old daughter has paid her ed. expenses for college 2016 out of pocket. 2 options avail. for us. 1) have her claim her expenses and us not claim her as dependent or 2) bc of our income level, claim her on Am. Opp. Tax Credit. Is this a simple solution as to what is a better option or do we need to run both options and see?
It depends on whether your daughter has provided more than half of her own support in 2016.
If she has, then she is not your dependent and she only can claim her education expenses.
If she has not, then you have provided more than half of her support and she is your dependent. Even if you decide not to claim her as a dependent, she is technically a dependent for the IRS and cannot claim her exemption of $4,050.
In this case, the better option is for you to claim her as a dependent and claim her education expenses.
