Employer Education Assistance Across Years

I have about $12,000 of tuition expenses reported on 1098-T for this year. My employer will pay for $5,250 of it this year and another $5,250 of it next year, which totals $10,500.  This leaves me a total of $1,500 remaining, which I'd like to claim an education credit for.  How would I file this?  Thanks!

If you have already received the reimbursement or are positive you are getting it, then you would want to only claim the $1500 by entering the 1098-T along with the extra $5250 subtracted by following these steps:

    1. Open your return
    2. Go to federal Deductions and Credits
    3. Enter Education Information, 1098-T
    4. continue answering
    5. When asked Did you Receive a Scholarship or Grant, answer yes
    6. Employer- provided  Assistance, enter the full $10,500

If there is a high chance of you not getting the reimbursement then you may want to claim the 2021 tuition and employer assistance as reported along with the higher credit. You can amend later, if you get the rest of the reimbursement.

If you will have education expenses for 2022, then the 2022 employer assistance may go to that instead, you could file 2021 as reported with the higher credit.

See IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education page 59 for employer assistance.
