finished school in 2020, finished paying in 2021

so in december of 2020, i finished school for a certification license. i did claim what i paid for already towards it last year, but in 2021 i paid the rest of the tuition. can i still claim the rest i paid for 2021 even if i wasn’t in school anymore? it’s not a school that sends out 1098s it’s a cosmo school- so i’m not sure

A. No. The payments must be made in the year the classes were taken.

There's one exception, but it doesn't apply in your case. If you pay, this year, for classes starting in the first quarter of next year, you may claim the expense this year.
