Former Employer Mailed W-2 to Parents Address - What Do I Report?

Hi all! Looking for some guidance regarding a W-2 I received from my former employer and address changes. For reference, I live in Virginia and changed jobs back in April 2022, which in the same year I also moved to a new address in July 2022. To ensure my W-2 was received on time this year, I changed my address at my former employer to my parents address since I did not know my current address till after I left my former job. Thus the W-2 from my former employer has my parents address on it, an address I have never lived at.

I know I'll need to report that I moved from one address to a new one. However, do I only report my former address that I actually lived in, and my current address? Or do I need mention anything about my parent's address since that is the address listed on the W-2? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Q. Do I only report my former address that I actually lived in, and my current address?

A. In the personal info section of TurboTax, you list your current address and that is what will go on your tax forms, state and federal.

Q. Do I need mention anything about my parent's address since that is the address listed on the W-2?

A. No. It's not relevant for tax filing.  There's no where, on the federal tax form for that info to go. There's no where on the state return for it  either, except possibly if you actually moved from one state to another (and even then it would be rare). In that case, you will be asked for it in the state interview (not in the personal info section).

The only full address you will need to enter will be your current address.   If your move was to a new state, you will need to enter the other state you resided in during 2022 so that TurboTax generates the correct part-year state tax returns.   When you enter your W-2, TurboTax will auto-populate your address with your current address.   You can change it to your parents' address so that it matches what is on file, but it won't cause any issues if you leave it with your current address.   Entering the correct information for the numbered boxes, especially the state boxes at the bottom is what is important.

If your move was from one state to another, see the FAQs below.   If your move was in the same state, ignore the links below 😉
