Graduate Fellowship In-between Masters and PHD

December 2020 graduated with a Masters, Early 2021 started a fellowship for 10k, 2022 started a PHD.

Never received any kind of W-2 or 1099. What should I do?

Any insight helps!

Edit: The state where I live is California, and the fellowship was in Michigan. So I believe I pay Michigan taxes.

Edit: Okay, I found out that telecommuting to Michigan, you don't have to pay State tax. For federally tax, it said on the IRS website that I need to add it to gross income on my 1040. New question is- How do I access 1040 in Turbotax? Every link sends me to the W-2, which I don't have.

If the Fellowship was reported on a W-2, you would enter that and it would be earned Income. It would be listed on your 1040 line 1.

If it was reported on a 1099-MISC, it would be entered as "other income" on Schedule 1. It would be considered "unearned income".

I suggest you enter it as "Other Income".

In TurboTax:

Go to Personal Income or Wages & Income depending on your program.

Scroll down to the VERY LAST option "Less Common Income" and click Show more

On this new drop-down list scroll down to the VERY LAST option "Miscellaneous Income" and click START

Now scroll down to the VERY LAST option "Other reportable income" and click Start

Select YES on the "Any Other Taxable Income?" screen

Type "Fellowship" and the amount

This will flow to Schedule 1 and your 1040 line 8

TO CHECK IN TURBOTAX ONLINE:

Click "Tax Tools" on the LEFT SIDE BAR then click "Tools" that open below

Click "View Tax Summary" on the screen

Click "Preview my 1040" which now appears on the LEFT SIDE BAR
