Graduate School Tuition Reimbursement

I paid college tuition in 2021.  My employer based reimbursement was not paid to me until 2022.  The money was not included on my 2021 W2.   How do i treat this reimbursement for 2021 taxes?

    Treat it as if the reimbursement was paid in 2021. 

     

    According to the IRS:

    "Refunds received after 2021 but before your income tax return is filed. If anyone receives a refund after 2021 of qualified education expenses paid on behalf of a student in 2021 and the refund is paid before you file an

    income tax return for 2021, the amount of qualified education expenses for 2021 is reduced by the amount of the refund."

     

    If it is on your W2 next year, adjust for it by selecting that it was for a different year.
