For a graduate student who qualifies for a tuition deduction but had no income in 2020 (and therefore apparently no use for the deduction), what are the advantages of filing a tax return?

There are none.   Graduate students are not eligible for the American Opportunity Credit which has a refundable component.     And if you had no income you have no tax liability against which to apply a tax credit from an education credit.

    Who has to file?
