My son used the Hazlewood Act for his college tuition. I received at 1098-T with an amount listed in Box 1 only. The next question asks if he received any veteran benefits. Do we have to list that same amount both times? Or do we not have to list it as veteran benefits since it was not given to us directly?

It's not clear what's going on.  The Hazelwood act is essentially a a tuition waiver.  None of the tuition, paid by Hazelwood,  should be included in either box 1 or box 5 of the 1098-T.   The box 1 amount should only be the fees not covered by Hazelwood.  If that's not clear, usually because the box 1 amount is so little, you should contact the college to verify.

So that means you do not enter any amount for veterans benefits paid.

But if box 1 does include the amount paid by Hazelwood, and that amount is not already in box 5, then you enter the amount as either veterans benefits or scholarships not included on the 1098-T.
