TurboTax will ask questions to see if your education expenses qualify you for the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. You can only have one of the credits and TurboTax will check to see which will have the best impact on your tax liability or refund.

At the end of the Education section does it say you do not qualify for either credit?  The Lifetime Learning Credit is not refundable, which means it can only be used to reduce your tax liability and not be part of a refund.

Here are directions to the Education area where the 1098-T is entered. Your 1098-T will provide information for the areas of the return looking at the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit . If you qualify, Turbo Tax will recommend which will help the most for your return, as you are allowed only one of them per year.

  1. To enter your Form 1098-T, please click on Deductions and Credits, on the side menu bar
  2. Scroll down to Education and select See More
  3. Click on Start or Revisit next to Expenses and Scholarships
  4. Select to Edit the student or if you have not been added yet, Add a Student

Turbo Tax will walk you through entering your tuition paid and education expenses.

If this does not completely solve the problem, please let us know more details, so we may better assist you. We cannot see your return from here.
