Hello, my question is that I paid out of pocket money for part of my tuition. Where to I claim that on my taxes?

You do that as you report your 1098-T.

Here are directions to the Education area where the 1098-T is entered. Your 1098-T will provide information for the areas of the return looking at the American Opportunity Credit, the Lifetime Learning Credit, and also Tuition Deduction. If you qualify, Turbo Tax will recommend which will help the most for your return, as you are allowed only one of them per year.

  1. To enter your Form 1098-T, please click on Deductions and Credits, on the side menu bar
  2. Scroll down to Education and select See More
  3. Click on Start or Revisit next to Expenses and Scholarships

Turbo Tax will walk you through entering your tuition paid and education expenses.

Note:  If you "copy and paste" to enter some of the information, it might have spaces or other invisible formatting characters that are cause errors.  Please be sure there are no extra spaces before the entries or after your entries.

Box 1 of the 1098-T is for total tuition and fees paid, regardless of the source of the funds.  The box 1 amount includes tuition paid by scholarship, loans and out-of-pocket.  You do not make a separate entry for tuition paid out-of-pocket. So, essentially the difference between box 1 and box 5, of the 1098-T,  is the amount you can claim for the tuition credit.

You may also enter books and other course materials, including a computer, as qualified expenses, regardless of how paid for.
