Question

How can I claim an education loan interest-paid adjustment if the load was taken in a foreign country? I do not have a 1098-E.

I came to the US as an international student and was paying my education loan interest back in India. Since I don't have a 1098-E. How can I claim it on my tax filing?

Generally, you can’t deduct student loan interest paid to a non-U.S. college or university. You can only deduct interest used to pay qualified educational expenses at an eligible educational institution.

An eligible educational institution is generally any accredited public, nonprofit, or proprietary (privately owned profit-making) college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution. Also, the institution must be eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the U.S. Department of Education.

An eligible educational institution also includes certain educational institutions located outside the United States that are eligible to participate in the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid (FSA) programs.

See if your school is on the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Post Secondary Institutions and Programs (DAPIP) or the Federal Student Loan Program list
