Question

How can I enter the federal taxes my university withheld from my stipend? I can see the amount on my 1042-S but cannot enter on the education information page on Turbotax

I am a non-resident alien graduate student and I received 1042-S form (income code 16, exemption code 16) for my stipend from my university. This is distinct from my 1098-T tuition statement, so I entered them individually under the education section on Turbotax.

Here is the problem: Because I am an international student, my university withholds federal taxes (%14) on my stipend. The amount is written on my 1042-S but I cannot enter that amount because Turbotax does not ask about taxes withheld like it does for the pages where we enter the W-2 information.

You can enter this information in TurboTax in

  • Deductions & Credits
  • Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • Estimated Tax Payments

This will give you the credit for the taxes withheld.
