Question

How can I tell if I have claimed the American Opportunity or Hope credit? It says to check form 8863, which I have, but I can't tell if I have claimed or not?

For most people (almost all) if there's an entry on line 8 of form 8863, you claimed the AOC that year.  The Hope was before 2007.

Also the AOC (refundable portion) will be on form 1040:

2020: Line 29

2019: Line 18c

2018: Line 17c

2017: Line 68

You won't be able to tell if you've taken the American Opportunity Credit in past year's on the current year's Form 8863. You'll have to check your previous year's tax returns and the attached Form 8863 to see which year's you got the credit. Please see How do I access a prior-year return?
