How do I decline the lifetime learning credit?

It says I'm not qualified for the lifetime learning credit (or it says $0), but at the end it won't let me file with free Turbo Tax because it's saying I have the lifetime learning credit. I don't want this, I just want to be able to file for free.

If you don't qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit, you'll have to delete the forms that are related to education credits.

If you see form 8863 and form 1098-T, delete them. Click here for instructions

  • However, if you have form 1098-T for 2021, you shouldn't delete that form. You'll need to upgrade. because Form 8863 is not included in the TurboTax free edtion.

Situations covered by TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction
