Question

How do I file a T4A from a Canadian university? I am a full time virtual PhD student at a Canadian university but I live in the US fulltime. I am filing US Taxes.

You will need to report this income as Foreign Earned Income;

  1. Go to federal>wages and income
  2. Less Common Income>Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion

  3. Answer the questions. Don't try to claim the exclusion because you will not qualify based on the Physical Presence Test. You are only reporting the income.

  4. After this is complete, you can claim a Foreign Tax Credit for the amount of withholding tax paid to Canada if the university withheld taxes.

  5. Federal>deductions and credits>deductions and credits>estimate and other taxes paid>Foreign Tax Credit>start or revisit.
  6. Note, since this is a T4A, you may have a filing requirement in Canada as well as the US.
