You most likely received a form 1099-G.  If so use the instructions below.

You would enter the Taxable Grant information reported on the 1099-G, in TurboTax, by doing the following:

  • Log in to your TurboTax Online account, or open your TurboTax CD/Download program
  • Click to Continue your return/Take me to my return
  • Click on Federal Taxes
  • Click on Wages & Income
  • Locate 1099-MISC and Other Common Income, and click to Show More
  • Locate Other 1099-G Income  and click Start or Edit

It depends on how it was reported to you; 1098-T, 1099-G. W-2, 1099-Misc and why you got the money.

Since you're asking in the education section, I'll assume you got the money from your college and there was no IRS form used.

In TurboTax (TT), enter at:

Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)

Deductions & Credits

-Scroll down to:

--Education

  --Education Expenses

The interview is long and tedious, but you will eventually be asked about scholarships. When asked how much was used for room and board, enter the taxable amount.  That will put it on line 1 of form 1040 with a notation (SCH), treating it as earned income, for most tax purposes.
