How do I know if my parents claimed the American Opportunity Credit or the Hope credit?

Ask them.   They can look at old tax returns to see if they used the credit.  Tell them to look for a credit on Form 8863 on past returns.   The AOTC can be used a total of four times while you are an undergraduate----but the times a parent claimed the credit for you "count" toward that total of four.
