Question

How do I make sure to get my state college tuition deduction even if I do not qualify for the federal deduction?

For federal taxes I do not qualify for college tuition deduction, and as a result TT seems to ignore my 1098-T info. Once I go the my state tax (MA), even when I click Adjustments - college tuition, TT does not ask for the amount. How can I enter the deduction that is supposed to show up on line 11 of my State Schedule Y?

Double check the math and that you actually qualify. If the tuition does exceed 25% of your AGI and you are not getting any deduction,  contact support.

Differences Between MA and Federal Tax Law For Personal Income  states:

College Tuition Deduction - Massachusetts allows a deduction for tuition payments paid by taxpayers for themselves, their spouses, and their dependents who attend a qualifying two or four-year college leading to an undergraduate or associate degree, diploma, or certificate.

The deduction is equal to the amount by which the tuition payments, less any scholarships, grants, or financial aid received, exceed 25% of the taxpayer's Massachusetts adjusted gross income.
