How to decline american opportunity credit?

TurboTax automatically chooses the credit that gives you the biggest tax break.

If you qualify for the American Opportunity Credit you can choose whether to take the credit or not. 

To do this follow these steps: type in 'letme' in the search box and click on 'Jump to letme' in the results. Uncheck the box on the American Opportunity Credit and either choose another educational credit or none at all.
