How to enter “Taxable Scholarship” as income in TT2023 deluxe desktop

I just noticed a change between TT2022 and TT2023, in the entry of "Taxable Scholarship" as income where:

  • In TT2022, I was able to optionally enter it via Wages & Income > Less Common Income > Taxable Scholarships and Fellowships.  The result would then populate Schedule 1, line 8r.
  • In TT2023, they removed the "Taxable Scholarships and Fellowships" that was under Wages & Income > Less Common Income.  I played with other options under Less Common Income and was not able to get the data to populate Schedule 1, line 8r.

@Hal_Al  was tremendous help to me last year in this post where it saved me money (thank you!) and I listed every step.  But now those steps don't apply.

I don’t need to report it this year, but curious to learn for the future how else one would enter the taxable Scholarship as income to populate Schedule 1, line 8r?  Any workarounds?  TIA

Taxable scholarships can be entered under

Deductions & Credits

Education

Go through the interview "as if" you will report a 1098-T regardless if you do or not. (just bypass the 1098-T if you are not entering one).

At some point the program will ask about scholarships not on 1098-T.

Enter the amount of the taxable portion there.

It will go to Schedule 1 line 8r

To get the income on line 8r, of Schedule 1, you can now only enter it at "Education Expenses and Scholarships" in the Deductions and Credits section (not the income section).

I don't know why they changed it, probably just to get the online and download versions in sync.
