How to file out of pocket tuition not listed on the 1098-T?

How do I include the amount I paid for my school tuition out of pocket? My school 1098-T does not have a box 2 and did not include the total amount they received from me out of pocket. How could I claim the out of pocket money? Do I just choose the option saying that the amount was different and add all out of pocket and scholarship grants together?

No, you would enter the 1098-T as it appears. You will enter the out of pocket costs in a separate screen.

As you continue through the interview, you will return to the "Education Summary" screen.

There you will see a line "Other Education Expenses". If you select Start/Edit, this will walk you through the interview questions to enter your Out of Pocket costs.

So I would enter the amount I paid for tuition on the (Books and materials required to be purchased from the school) line? Or the (Books and materials not required to be purchased from the school) line? There's no specific line on the Education Summary to input the out of pocket tuition.

If it is for the same school, I would contact them to get the 1098-T corrected as the IRS compares what you report to what they receive from the school.

Hello. For 2020 on TurboTax, there is no option for "Other Education Expenses". Where can I add additional out of pocket tuition expenses?

In the 1098-T screen, click on the link "What if this is not what I paid the school" underneath box 1. You will then be able to enter the actual amounts paid.

If the actual tuition amounts are different and you cannot obtain a corrected 1098-T from your school, you can do the following.

Go back into your return to the Education Summary screen and select Edit next to the Tuition line. Then select Yes you received a 1098-T and you should see the 1098-T information appear.

Below Box 2 on that screen, you should see a blue sentence that reads "What if this is not what I paid to this school?". Click on that link and a separate window should pop up asking you to "Enter the full amount of tuition paid to your school". Enter the Total amount of tuition paid to the school in that box.

I am having trouble seeing where to input out of pocket tuition payment in 2019 Turbotax. On the summary for education expenses it has "0" because it never asked for tuition amount

Go through the entire education interview until you reach a screen titled "Your Education Expenses Summary". Click edit next to the student's name. That should take you to a screen “Here’s your Education Summary”. Click edit next to the section you want to change; tuition, in your case.

Details:

To enter your Form 1098-T information (even when TurboTax thinks it has already been entered and is showing $0), go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:

Click Edit next to the student name.
On the screen titled “Here’s your Education Summary”, click Edit beside Tuition.
Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.

To go directly to the Education section of your return, use these steps:

On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education”
Click on the blue “Jump to education” link
