Question

How to get credit if student loan interest paid is less than $600?

Last year I paid $1200 in Student Loan Interest and received the credit when I filed Married but Separate. I got the 1098 E form.

This year I paid $500 in Student Loan Interest and did not get the 1098E. I've been trying to find a way to get this $500 applied as a credit, but I've had no luck.

Any advice?

Thanks.

You will still enter your student loan interest paid in the same section as if you did receive Form 1098-E.  You will just be using the amount of interest paid found on your year-end statement instead of on Form 1098-E.

Use these steps to go to the right section of your return to enter your student loan interest:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “student loan interest” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to student loan interest
  • Click on the blue “Jump to student loan interest” link and enter your information
