There is no "deduction" (since 2018) for tuition paid. However, a tax credit is allowed for paying tuition for yourself, your spouse or your dependent, but nobody else.
So, unless the person you paid for is your dependent, you cannot claim the money you paid. However, the person you paid for can claim the credit on his own tax return. If he is somebody's dependent, that person (usually the parents) can claim the credit, instead. Although the general rule, in taxes, is that you must be the one making the payment, to get the deduction/credit, there is an exception for education.
