How to tell if part of my scholarships from the 1098-T were included in my W-2

Hello,

Is there a way to tell if a portion of the scholarship amount reported in box 5 of my 1098-T form was already included in my W-2 form? For context, the difference between boxes 5 and 1 on my 1098-T is about $7000. My wages (box 1 on W-2) is double what is listed as scholarships (box 5) on the 1098-T.

I am a graduate student, and I did not purchase items like textbooks during the year.

Thanks!

The program asks because this is not something that can be determined from your tax forms.

It is asking, "For the amount shown as earned (in Box 1 on your W-2) did you punch-in and earn that amount or did your employer pay part of your tuition and then add that amount to Box 1 on your W-2?"

If you are unsure, you can ask your employer.
