I am a cosignor on a private student loan for my son. i make the monthly payments, am i eligible to deduct this student loan interest? my son's name is on the 1098-e, but i make the payments

No, you are not eligible to deduct the student loan interest. Only, the person whose name the loan is in is eligible for the deduction for the student loan interest provided on Form 1098-E.

If your son can be claimed by you as a dependent, but is legally responsible for the interest on the student loan (his name on the 1098-E), neither the student nor parent qualify to claim interest on their taxes.

wrong  if you are a cosigner then you are also legally responsible for the repayment of the loan (in case your student does not)  which makes you eligible to deduct the interest
