Question

I am a student filing my taxes. Last year I received over $1000 through my 1098-T and this year it’s $0. Can anyone explain why?

There may be several reasons why TurboTax is showing $0 for the education credit. Here are other reasons:

  1. You're being claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.
  2. Your scholarships, Grants, etc. are greater than your tuition and education expenses.
  3. You didn't enter any income or your income is too high.
  4. For additional requirements to qualify for the American Opportunity Credit, see Who is eligible to take the American Opportunity Tax Credit?
  5. For additional requirements to qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit, see Who is eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit?
