If the form 1098 transferred over from last year, delete the form. To delete a form that came in the mail (for example, W-2, 1098, or 1099) it's best to do it from that form's summary screen.
Type 1098 in the search bar and click on jump to 1098 in the search results to get to the summary screen.
If you did have a mortgage on form 1098, the IRS lets you deduct your mortgage interest, but only if you itemize deductions. You can't deduct the principal (the borrowed money you're paying back).
