I am trying to figure out if I have claimed the American Opportunity credit or the hope credit and if so how many years I've claimed it. I've been in college since 2018.

I have been in college since 2018 so I know I haven't used it more the 4 times allowed but it is asking me how many times ive claimed either of them and I am unsure and unsure of how to figure that out. I do have my past years' returns on hand but I'm not sure where to look for the answer.

Look for form 8863. It will identify which credit you claimed, if any. Lacking for 8863, look at for 1040.

For 2018, if there is an amount on lines 12 and/or 17, you probably claimed it. Verify line 12 by looking at Schedule 2.

For 2019, look at lines 13b &18c. Verify the amount on line 13b, by looking at line 3 of Schedule 3.

If your parents claimed the American Opportunity credit, for your education, while you were their dependent; those times count against your 4 time limit
