Question

I bought a computer with characteristics necessary for my research, so I can write papers, so I can fulfill the PhD requirements. Does it count as educational expense?

The machine has only been used for research, and have only the necessary components for it.

No, unless it was required by and purchased from the college.

Most computer purchases are an allowable expense for the American Opportunity Credit (AOC).  But, grad students are not eligible for the AOC.
