To claim the adoption tax credit in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return if it isn't already open.
  2. Search for adoption credit and select the Jump to link.
  3. On the Did you pay any adoption expenses in 2019 or earlier? or the Credit for Adoption Expenses screen, read the information and, if you qualify, answer Yes.
  4. Continue answering questions until you're finished.

Regarding Sylvan Learning Centers: For federal income tax purposes, regular tutoring is considered a personal service and is not deductible.

  • However, if your child has special needs, you may be able to deduct tutoring services as a medical expense. You would include the cost of the tutor together with your other medical expenses, assuming you itemize your deductions on a Schedule A and assuming you meet the threshold for deductibility. SeeIRS Publication 502, page 13, Special Education.

Regarding your 17 year old's school related expenses:

  • If they're in college or a university, you would enter the information in the education section of TurboTax. See Where do I enter a 1098-T?

If these are high school related expenses, they're not deductible for federal income tax purposes. However, your state may allow a deduction. To contact your state's Department of Revenue, click here.
