Question

I claimed my son and entered his college expenses on my taxes. When doing his taxes, should I answer YES or NO to "Do you want to enter your higher education expenses"?

You should answer NO to the question of does he want to enter higher education expenses. If you claimed him as a dependent and entered his college expenses he cannot claim the expenses.

Make sure that it is indicated that he is a dependent of someone else and is not claiming himself. A dependent cannot enter higher education expenses as they are unable to claim a credit.

From the IRS:

Who cannot claim an education credit?

You cannot claim an education credit when:

  • Someone else, such as your parents, list you as a dependent on their tax return
  • Your filing status is married filing separately
  • You already claimed or deducted another higher education benefit using the same student or same expenses (see Education Benefits: No Double Benefits Allowed for more information)
  • You (or your spouse) were a non-resident alien for any part of the year and did not choose to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes (find more information in Publication 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens)
