Question

I created an etsy shop to raise money for someone's education, but all of the income is under my name, even though it's going right to a college. What can I do?

All of the money is going directly to a university, none of it is even going to me.

What form did they use to report the income and about how much was it?

Sounds like you were doing a kind act, but you might end up with the tax bill.

Taxpayers can make donations, but the non-profits must be registered in order for Taxpayers to claim those donations as deductions. The school might be non-profit, but if the money went to the school to benefit a particular student, it doesn't count as a donation.

I assume you made things and sold them. If the money passed through your hands, you will need to claim that income.

If the student is your dependent you could claim the education expenses you paid, but if the student is not your dependent, you can't.

If you claim the income as self-employment income, you can deduct your expenses from the income, but you'll pay self-employment tax (Social Security) on the profit.

If you only did this as a one-time event, you might report the income as hobby income. You won't pay self-employment tax but you then can't claim expenses on producing that income either.
