Question

I do not qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit. But when I try to file, it says I need to upgrade because I have the Lifetime Learning Credit - error in software?

I am using the Free Edition, and it wants me to upgrade to Deluxe because of this in order to file. But TurboTax assessed earlier that I did not qualify, so confused as to why it is saying I do have it at the end.

Yes, you would need to upgrade to Deluxe if you were claiming an education credit.

If you are not getting any credit, you can delete the extra forms and you will be able to file your return for free. To do that in TurboTax online:

  1. From inside the return, scroll down to Tax Tools on the bottom of the left side menu.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Click on Delete a form (third on the list at the bottom of the screen).
  4. Find Form 8863 on the list of forms.
  5. Click Delete to the right.
  6. Confirm your Delete.
  7. Click Continue in the lower right.
  8. Find Form 1098-INT on the list of forms.
  9. Click Delete to the right.
  10. Click Continue with my return.
  11. At this point you should be able to complete your e-file in the free version.

Hi Julie,

Thanks so much for your quick response. I do not actually qualify for the credit, so yes I am hoping to avoid needing the upgrade. I followed your instructions, but I do not see either of those forms in the list under "Delete a form." Is there any other way to override TurboTax thinking I have this credit, even though it told me I do not? As a student, the Deluxe option is not affordable for me, so if this is a glitch that can't be overwritten then I'll look into other filing options.

To verify your current education credits, once you have your returned open, search for letme (one word) and use the Jump to letme link.    If you do not see Form 8863, Education Credits in your list of forms, then I don't think it is an education credit that is causing the need for an upgrade.

Review this help article and check to see if it is any of the things listed that is causing the upgrade.   If you have code D in box 12 of your W-2, you likely qualify for the Retirement Saving Contributions Credit (Saver's Credit), which requires an upgrade.   However, if you were a full-time student last year, you won't qualify for this credit.   Make sure you go through the questions in that section to make sure TurboTax has accurate information.
