Question

I don't have an income (I am a student) but I received scholarship money. Why do I have to file a 1040 form?

You probably are not required to file a tax return.  See the link below to confirm.  If you had scholarships in excess of your qualified education expenses, the excess is taxable income.  But that still does not mean you are required to file a return.  Do your parents want you to file a return so they can take an education credit, or why do you feel like you have to file a tax return?

Do I need to file a federal return this year?

Thank you for your response. The reason I was planning on filing taxes this year is because I will be paying off my student loans starting this summer via an income-based plan. This will be calculated using the previous year's income data (which is 0 for this year).
