I dropped out of a certification program at Columbia university due to covid. I am paying the tuition. Can I claim the credit for the$7K that was paid in 2021?

Yes, you can claim the expenses paid in 2021 even if the student did not attend class. or complete the course. 

 

According to the IRS:

Student withdraws from class(es). You can claim an American opportunity credit for qualified education expenses not refunded when a student withdraws.

Q. Can I claim the credit for the$7K that was paid in 2021?

A. Yes, if the class you dropped out of was a 2021 class/course.  If you are still paying, in 2021, for  class you dropped put of, in 2020, then no; you cannot claim that.
