Question

I finished my graduate degree in Spring 2023 and was actively taking 6 credit hours of classes from January 8th to April 28th. Is this full-time for five months?

I'm seeing about the retirement contribution deduction and am not sure if this would qualify as full time student for at least five months in 2023

No, it does not qualify as a full time student for the federal return (see below).  If you are referring to the Retirement Savings Credit you would not be considered a full time student. TurboTax will calculate this credit for you if you qualify and generate Form 8880.

A full-time student is a student who is enrolled for the number of hours or courses that the school considers to be full-time attendance.

To qualify as a student, the person must be, during some part of each of any five calendar months of the year:

  1. A full-time student at a school that has a regular teaching staff, course of study, and a regularly enrolled student body at the school, or
  2. A student taking a full-time, on-farm training course given by a school described in (1), or by a state, county, or local government agency.

The five calendar months do not have to be consecutive.  This would mean if you had another month of education you could count that to make 5 different months.
