Question

I had to buy a vehicle to get to and from classes, does that count as an eligible education expense?

No. The only qualified education expenses are:

For scholarships and grants, tuition, books and lab fees. That's it with no exceptions.

For 529 distributions, it's tuition, books, and lab fees along with the unqualified but allowed expense of room and board, provided that room and board is "in direct support" of the education.

For out of pocket expenses it's tuition, books, and lab fees.

Transportation expenses are not a qualified expense under any circumstances.
