Question

I have a 1098-T for a scholarship, but it shows $0 in box 1 for payments received for tuition. The entire scholarship went towards tuition, books, fees, etc. Shouldn't those expenses be deductible against the scholarship income?

So, do you have the entire amount of scholarship reported in box 5?

If all the scholarship goes to pay for the tuition amount, the box 1 amount should be adjusted to the same amount as the scholarship so that it will be an offset.

To correct the tuition amount in box 1, here are the steps:

    In TurboTax online,

    • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
    • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
    • Select Jump to 1098t
    • Follow prompts
    • On the screen, Type in the info from your 1098-T, check the box This is not what," Student' Name paid to school"
    • Enter the actual amount you paid
