Yes, you can file on your own. You will have to download, fill out and print Form 1040X: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf

Please follow these instructions:

  • Enter your name, current address, and social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) on the front of Form 1040X.
  • Don’t enter any other information on page 1. Also, don’t complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.
  • Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.
  • Complete a new or corrected return (Form 1040NR).
  • Across the top of the new or corrected return, write “AMENDED” (1040NR)
  • Across the copy of the original 1040 write "COPY OF ORIGINALLY SUBMITTED"
  • Attach 1040NR and the copy of the original 1040 to the back of Form 1040X.

You can use Sprintax to file your needed 1040-NR.  You will need to file the amended tax return (1040X) only if your original return was accepted by the IRS.

You will print and mail into the IRS the following:

 - Form 1040X - - link has the form and instructions
 - Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with “AS AMENDED” written on top of each page, and
 - a copy of the Form 1040 you originally submitted with “COPY OF ORIGINALLY SUBMITTED” written on top of each page.

Yes, you can download and fill out the 1040X and use sprintax to fill 1040NR, then print both forms and then send them both to the IRS.

I made the same mistake and I also got my  tax refund and recently got the stimulus check deposit.

I want to file an amendment and file form 1040NR through Sprintax.

However, when I click on the option that says I already filed 2019 taxes and need an amendment, Sprintax pauses the whole process and tells me that this needs to be treated offline.

I tried this 2 weeks ago and still waiting to be contacted by someone offline.

Can you please advice:

1) How long do I need to wait to be able to generate 1040NR form with Sprintax to include it in my amendment.

2) I got an stimlulus check because I made the mistake of filing as a resident. How do I give back this money to IRS?

Thank you!
