Question

I have already got my BA degree and pursuing graduate school. I had spent money on books, supplies and examination fees in 2019 required of the Grad S. Can I deduct it?

No. Only  tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance are qualified expenses.  Books are generally not a qualified expense*.  The more generous American Opportunity Credit (AOC) is not available to grad students. You can only use the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) or Tuition and Fees deduction (TFD).

*Student activity fees and expenses for course-related books, supplies, and equipment are included in qualified education expenses only if the fees and expenses must be paid to the institution for enrollment or attendance.
