If you have already filed your return then you will need to see if your return gets accepted or rejected.

  • If your return has been rejected by the IRS, then all you have to do is add any additional forms that you received on your return and refile.
  • If your return has been accepted by the IRS, then you have to file an amended return (1040X) to make changes. But please wait until your refund or payment is processed. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2021 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail. Please see How to amend a tax return for instructions (this will be updated once the 2021 Form 1040-X is ready).

To clarify, you received Form 1098-T for your daughter's Tuition, Form 1099-R is for retirement distributions. A 1099-R you have to include in your income. A 1098-T you want to include to be able to qualify for education credits. Please see What education tax credits are available? for additional information.

Tuition is reported on form 1098-T.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you (the parent) are either eligible for a tuition credit or deduction or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

The undergrad tuition credit  is very generous, including a refundable portion (you get a refund even if you have no tax liability).

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T.

If you claim the tuition credit, you do need to report that you got a 1098-T or that you qualify for an exception (the TurboTax interview will handle this)
