Question

I have recently received a grant relief due to Coronavirus pandemic. They have given me the grant and now asking to send my W9 through email. Is this normal and safe?

It is not safe to send your taxpayer identification number via email unless the document has been encrypted.  If you are unable to encrypt the document, ask the grantor for a secure "portal" or cloud service to which you can upload the document directly. 

 

Another alternative if you are sending the document directly to an agent of the grantor is to send the document via First Class Mail or using Priority Mail with a return receipt.
