Question

I have two kids in college. The education expenses section for my second child does not identify costs such as room and board, computer. Am I missing something?

I am looking to identify allowable expenses for my 529 distributions so that these distributions are not counted as income.

Let's start with the obvious things first.

  • The distribution was in your name for your dependent's education.
  • You entered the 1098-T in the program.
  • The students are at least half-time.
  • The school is not foreign.

Additional expenses are addressed in the "Did sally Pay for Books or Materials to attend school?" screen under Education Credits. Click on the blue "What other things can I deduct."

We suggest you enter in all of your education expenses and we'll figure out the rest. In the meantime, here are answers to some common questions about education-related expenses.
